Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Tiny School?

The words “Tiny School” is exactly what is sounds like: our school’s enrollment is limited to a maximum of ten students, delivering a small but impactful group experience with the focus still on the individual student. Our Tiny School is a one-room school where all grades are taught together.

What grades do you accept?

HATS accepts students in grades 1-6. Placement in grade 1 is determined by a minimal age of 6 and the readiness to learn to read. All students are interviewed and tested for correct placement in subjects. Testing usually takes two-three hours.

How do you register?

In January, registration opens for all students. Current student families fill out registration paperwork and pay $50 registration fee. For all new students, contact Mrs. Dantzler for information (call, email, or click the LEARN MORE button at the top of the page to fill out a Google form for more information). She then will set up an interview time, the necessary forms will be available, and a testing day will be scheduled to place the child in Math, Grammar, Reading, and Spelling. This takes about two-three hours. Registration fee is due with paperwork.

Is there a discount for siblings?

Short answer--No. As the school is geared toward a one-on-one environment, tuition is appropriate for this approach. In comparison to other private schools locally and across the state, HATS tuition is significantly less.

Do you offer sports?

No.

What are “Mom School” days?

These are the two days at home with Mom. Lessons are already scheduled and planned out for each child. These days are critical to the success and education of the child.

Can my child work independently on the two days per week at home?

These days are not intended to be “independent homework days” as most children below the high school years are not able to motivate themselves to do “school work”. Without the oversight of a parent, the child’s work may be in error as well, and thus, ineffective.

Why does my fourth grader not do 4th grade math?

Every curriculum, whether public, private, or home school, has a particular scope and sequence to what is taught and when. Across the board, these may not line up between previous schooling and HATS curriculum. Thus, each child is tested for correct placement in three key subjects--Math, Grammar, and Spelling. As success in these subjects is greatly dependent upon previous building blocks, placement is made to cover any gaps in knowledge that are detected. This may mean your child needs to go back in “perceived” level to catch up, as well as potentially skipping ahead.

If AISD has a school holiday/day off, will HATS?

The only holidays HATS takes are Labor Day, Thanksgiving (one full week), Christmas (two-three full weeks), and Spring Break (one full week). No other holidays are taken unless AISD closes for weather related reasons.

What if my child is sick? Are there make up days?

No. We are only in the formal classroom three days per week. There is no other time for makeups. With foreknowledge, lessons can be sent home in advance or picked up from the school if child is sick.
